The ideal Candidate hired will be under general direction, operates public transit coaches over assigned routes according to published schedules; performs related duties as required. Examples of Duties

  • Completes a mandatory and regulated pre-trip and post-trip inspection, including Air Brake test.
  • Operates public transit coaches of varying sizes over assigned routes in a safe and timely manner; may operate coaches during peak or non-peak workload situations and emergencies, and other non-revenue vehicles as required.
  • Secures fares, tickets/passes and transfers, and provides transfers and route information to passengers and the general public.
  • Assists persons with disabilities with boarding/alighting and proper use of securement systems, and ramps as appropriate.
  • Observes and complies with State and Local traffic laws and ordinances, and Agency rules and policies to ensure passenger and equipment safety.
  • Exercises tact and courtesy in dealing with passengers and the general public.
  • Completes accident, incident and various other reports.
  • Must maintain punctual and regular attendance to provide dependable service to the public, which may include forced-overtime per the ATU and Omnitrans MOU seniority guidelines.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Must be able to obtain/retain a California Class B driver’s license with endorsements. Must  have a stable work history, excellent driving record, and a minimum age of 21. Must possess a current (no less than 6 months old) California driver’s license. 

Knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to the safe operation of public transit vehicles. Ability to maintain a good attendance record and be at work on time; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; remain calm and composed under occasionally stressful conditions; deal courteously and effectively with passengers, fellow employees and the general public; follow written instructions and verbal orders; maintain a neat, professional appearance; and work any specified shift which may include day, swing, splits, or graveyard, weekends, and holidays.

Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations. The Selection Process

The ideal Candidate hired will be under general direction, performs skilled diagnostic repair and maintenance work on motor coaches, automobiles, and associated equipment; and performs related duties as required. Examples of Duties

  • Performs road tests of vehicles to ensure reliability.
  • Performs major mechanical repairs including engine, differential and transmission replacement.
  • Performs brake relines, including both heavy duty drum and disk air brake systems.
  • Removes, repairs, replaces and adjusts components of bus and/or automotive systems, including, but not limited to, engine, electrical, suspension, fuel, pneumatic, and hydraulic, and HVAC systems.
  • Pressure checks cooling system; replaces hoses, belts, fans and thermostats as needed; repairs or replaces radiators, recovery systems and water pumps.
  • Provides emergency road service to disabled vehicles.
  • Performs checks and repairs on HVAC systems including the use refrigerant recycling machines.
  • Completes written documentation of completed repairs and/or work completed.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses and repairs equipment failures. 
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections of transit coaches, light trucks and other vehicles/equipment.  
  • Uses test equipment such as a test meter/DVOM; is proficient in computer diagnostics.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Four or more years of experience in vehicle maintenance and/or formalized training in the maintenance of light and heavy vehicles; and a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Must have a Class B permit and endorsements prior to first day of work.  Must be able to obtain a Class B license by the end of probationary period.Knowledge of

  • Techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing light and heavy vehicles and equipment. 
  • Materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy equipment. 
  • Safe working practices relating to all assigned job duties.

Ability to

  •  Diagnose malfunctions and determine appropriate course of action. 
  • Operate computer diagnostic equipment. 
  • Operate mechanical and electronic testing equipment.
  • Interpret diagrams and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Receive, transmit and record information clearly, accurately and legibly.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Perform basic arithmetical calculations.

  • Read and understand policies, procedures and Agency regulations.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Class  B California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with passenger endorsements.

The ideal Candidate hired will be under moderate direction, services automobiles and motor coaches; removes and replaces fare box vault; sanitizes all vehicles; and performs duties as required.   Examples of Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this position:

  • Using high-pressure equipment dispenses compressed natural gas (CNG) into buses; fuels cars and support equipment (rolling stock) with gasoline.
  • Sweeps, mops, dusts and cleans rolling stock; operates cleaning and washing equipment including pressure washers, bus washes and manual cleaning gear.  
  • Removes, empties and reinstalls fare box vaults.                                          
  • Checks and dispenses fuel, (gasoline, CNG and diesel), oil and water and other fluids.                                                                                        
  • Checks for air system and fluid leaks, tire pressure and wear, inoperative lighting, unusual sounds, and unusual conditions, and reports defects to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Checks batteries and adds water as required. 
  • May operate light vehicles to transport parts and supplies.
  • Assists in cleaning work area. 
  • Moves rolling stock in order to perform services at the fuel island. 
  • Moves rolling stock between divisions and to vendors as necessary.                                                            
  • Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

The Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

One year experience in the area of vehicle service, cleaning, and/or maintenance desirable. High school diploma or GED.  Must provide at least a State of California Commercial Vehicle Instruction Permit Class B with passenger and air brakes endorsement or possess a State of California Commercial driver’s license with a B-P endorsement with airbrakes prior to first day of work. Must obtain and maintain a valid Class B California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with passenger endorsements after driver training. Must be available to work any specified Maintenance Department Shift which may include days, nights, graveyard, weekends, and, holidays.
ABILITY TO DEMONSTRATE

  • Light to heavy labor using strict safety rules
  • Teamwork. This job requires working closely and cooperatively with others in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic problem-solving, honesty, and the ability to work with a diverse workforce.
  • Common sense understanding in order to carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
  • Flexibility in order to work with extended exposure to outdoors, noise, unpleasant odors, heavy-duty cleaning chemicals, fumes, and all types of weather conditions.
