Mobility Services (MS)

Travel Training helps seniors and those with disabilities ride the bus.

The Omnitrans Travel Training program provides one-on-one or group assistance to seniors (age 62+) and individuals with disabilities and helps them ride the Omnitrans bus system for the first time. The program is free to participate in and is available to qualifying individuals who reside in the Omnitrans service area. The Travel Training program gives participants the information and skills to ride the bus with confidence and take advantage of its benefits.

Travel Training provides customized assistance based on the unique needs of each participant, allowing them to learn the skills needed to travel safely and comfortably on public transportation.

During training, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize routes, bus stops, and landmarks
  • Use a bus book and plan your trip
  • Get to and from bus stops safely
  • Communicate with bus drivers
  • Pay fares and buy passes
  • Board, ride, and exit the bus safely
  • Transfer to other buses
  • Travel throughout the community to all the places you want to go

Community Mobility Specialists can show you how to travel to doctor appointments, shopping malls, senior centers, school, work, or to visit family and friends. Your trainer will develop a training plan based on the destinations that you would like to travel to.

The Volunteer Driver Program helps pay for your driving needs.

The Volunteer Driver program, also known as the Transportation Reimbursement Escort Program (TREP), provides mileage reimbursement for individuals with disabilities who cannot use public transportation and rely on others to drive them for transportation. Participants choose their own driver, usually a family member, friend, neighbor, or caretaker. The reimbursement offsets the cost associated with providing transportation and can be used for trips to medical appointments, personal errands, visiting family and friends, or getting to work.

Learn about eligibility & qualifications

Qualifying individuals are living with disabilities and cannot use public transportation for some or all trips, and require the assistance of another individual for their transportation needs.

  • If qualified, you must identify someone who is willing to be your driver.
  • You keep track of the furthest destination that you travel to from your home each day.
  • At the end of the month, your records for the furthest destination on the day of travel are submitted via paper or online.
  • Reimbursement funds are deposited into the rider’s bank account, and they reimburse their driver. All reimbursement funds are made via direct deposit only.
