APTA’s 2022 Bus Security Gold Award

April 21, 2022

Omnitrans is proud to announce that our Safety & Security Department has been named the winner of APTA (American Public Transportation Association)’s 2022 Bus Security Gold Award! We are the 45-year-old public transit agency providing more than 10 million passengers each year in Southern California’s San Bernardino County with the fixed route, express bus, bus rapid transit, and paratransit services.
Last year, Omnitrans implemented new strategies to enhance safety and reduce rule enforcement responsibilities for our essential Coach Operators and customers.

Policy to create written regulations for passenger behavior including security alerts and, in extreme cases, the suspension and banning of disruptive individuals. Omnitrans didn’t stop there. At our San Bernardino Transit Center, the agency purchased T3 Patrollers for security staff and partnered with WeTip to promote new reporting options and enhance response time and coverage capabilities.

Law enforcement collaboration was another area of focus, with Omnitrans’ Security team hosting collaborative meetings, training, and outreach events to complement crime reduction efforts. On-site SWAT and K-9 training enhanced law enforcement visibility and front-line staff morale. A different type of security also became necessary last year. Feeling safe and secure onboard took on new meaning during the pandemic. Omnitrans’ innovative staff developed customized Driver Barriers for its coaches. The barriers protected operators and customers from close contact. We’re proud to say that the design was shared with peers and implemented at other agencies to reduce the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Continued focus on the safety and security of its staff and customers allows Omnitrans to fulfill its mission to connect our community with coordinated and sustainable transit service.
